What is your specialty and why do you love it?
Our specialty is LGBTQ weddings. There are a lot of reasons why I love these couples and their weddings but first and foremost, it’s because we truly take joy in seeing everyone celebrate the way they want. We’ve wiped the tears of clients who aren’t supported by their blood families. We’ve sent couples down the aisle who have already been together for 14 years but didn’t want to get married until everyone could. We’ve danced all night alongside couples who knew that their love was just as special as anyone else’s. I love these weddings because most of them never thought they would get married so they put more sincerity into the planning and design and it’s our job to bring that out. It’s a special job. It comes with a level of humility and bravery and unwavering support that we wear as a badge of honor for these couples. Nothing feels better than a hug from a gay couple that knows they got to have their dream day, their way, and with all the love and support we could muster.
What is your favorite part of a wedding?
My favorite part of a wedding is by far the toasts! We work with our couples for 6 months to a year and even with that amount of time, we only get the chance to know them so well. So when we get to watch their families and friends gush about what wonderful people they are, what kind of friends they are, what loving brothers and sisters they are – that’s my favorite. It’s the “behind the scenes” of them that we miss a lot of times because we are focused on the behind-the-scenes of the wedding! So during toasts, if you look to the back of the room, you’ll see me and my team laughing, crying, and toasting right along with everyone else. And if it includes embarrassing stories or props, you better believe we’ll remember!
How did you get into the wedding business?
Years of hospitality and event positions ranging from hotels, restaurants, venues, and catering drove it home for me. I grew up watching my mom throw lavish dinner parties and was heavily influenced by her style and poise. I knew I wanted to be a wedding planner in my mid-20’s after attending Colorado State University as an English Major and then moving to Florida. Once I realized that I could actually have a career in this field, I started working my way towards this goal. I started my company in 2009 as a side-gig as I continued working full time in the industry. I learned a LOT in all those different positions, made great industry connections, and really set myself up for success without even knowing it! I’ve been working as a wedding planner full time since 2017 and continue to grow my network, build my team, gain more education on our industry, and push my dream to the next level.
What is your passion outside of your work?
When I’m not working an event or attending an event, I like to moonlight as a karaoke star. 😉 Many of our DJ and entertainment companies host karaoke at bars that I’ve made a regular schedule around. We always have music on in the house and I sing and dance with our kids often. Music truly does offer a universal connection to people and I love the thrill of performing and making people smile and get lost in the music for a few minutes.
What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?
I think most people don’t know that I’m actually an introverted-extrovert. I can definitely “put it on” when I’m with a group of people but I’m also just as happy being curled up at home with my hubby, kids, and puppy. I love the heart-thumping pounding of bass while dancing with my friends at the club and I love laughing at “fail videos” on YouTube from my couch. I think a lot of people in the hospitality and events industry could probably be categorized as that but I only really started to embrace it in the last few years. Being surrounded by friends brings me as much joy as a quiet walk by myself and I think it’s important that I know that.
